Mr Mohyudin On the Day of Surgery
A step-by-step guide to what happens on your procedure day
Arrival & Admission
You will be admitted to the day surgery unit by a specialist nurse. Your consent form will be reviewed and signed, marking site (the correct eye) will be confirmed with you, and your prescription eye drops and pre-operative medications will be administered. This process typically takes 30–60 minutes.
Anaesthesia
Most ophthalmic procedures at Spire Elland are performed under local anaesthetic — you are awake but completely comfortable throughout. A local anaesthetic injection or anaesthetic drops around the eye ensure the eye is numb and still. For children and some complex adult cases, general anaesthetic is used. The anaesthetic type is discussed and agreed at your pre-operative consultation.
In the Operating Theatre
The operating theatre team will verify your identity, procedure, and eye once more before starting (World Health Organisation surgical safety checklist). Mr Mohyudin operates with dedicated, experienced theatre staff. Cataract surgery takes 15–25 minutes per eye; eyelid procedures 20–60 minutes; squint surgery 60–90 minutes. You may be aware of bright lights and gentle pressure but should not experience pain.
Recovery Room
After surgery, you are transferred to the recovery area for monitoring. For local anaesthetic cases, this is usually 30–60 minutes. Nursing staff check your vision, comfort, and eye pressure before discharge. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are commenced before you leave. Written post-operative instructions are provided.
Discharge
For day surgery under local anaesthetic, you are discharged the same day once your observations are stable and you are comfortable. You must not drive on the day of surgery. A responsible adult must collect you. If you had a general anaesthetic, you must have a responsible adult with you for the remainder of that day and overnight.
