Mr Mohyudin Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions most commonly asked by patients considering a consultation with Mr Mohamed Mohyudin.
About Mr Mohyudin
What are Mr Mohyudin's qualifications?
Mr Mohamed Mohyudin holds MBChB, BSc, and MSc degrees and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). He has a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Ophthalmology and completed two subspecialty fellowships: one in oculoplastics (eyelid and orbital surgery) and one in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. He is a Substantive Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.
What is Mr Mohyudin's GMC registration number?
Mr Mohyudin's GMC number is 7039600. You can verify his registration at any time on the GMC website at gmc-uk.org.
Why is he called 'Mr' and not 'Dr'?
In the UK, surgeons traditionally use the title 'Mr' (or 'Ms'/'Miss') rather than 'Dr' once they complete their specialist surgical training. This is a long-standing British medical convention and a mark of surgical status — not a lack of medical qualification. Mr Mohyudin is a fully qualified doctor and surgeon.
What is the difference between a consultant ophthalmologist and an optician?
An optician (optometrist) tests vision and prescribes glasses or contact lenses but is not a medical doctor and cannot perform surgery. A consultant ophthalmologist is a fully qualified medical doctor who has completed a minimum of 13–16 years of training, can diagnose and treat all eye diseases, and is trained to perform eye surgery.
Does Mr Mohyudin still work for the NHS?
Yes. Mr Mohyudin is the Substantive (permanent) Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. His private practice at Spire Elland Hospital and Newmedica runs alongside his NHS role and draws on the same level of expertise and experience.
How many cataract operations has Mr Mohyudin performed?
Mr Mohyudin has performed over 5,000 cataract operations across his NHS and private practice, including complex cases such as patients with previous LASIK, dense cataracts, and small pupils.
What subspecialties does Mr Mohyudin cover?
Mr Mohyudin's subspecialty interests are: cataract surgery (including complex and premium-lens cases), oculoplastics (upper and lower eyelid surgery, ptosis, chalazion), strabismus / squint surgery (adults and children), and paediatric ophthalmology (amblyopia, blocked tear ducts, childhood squint).
Consultations & Booking
Do I need a GP referral to see Mr Mohyudin privately?
No. Self-paying patients can book directly without a referral — simply call Spire Elland Hospital on 01422 324000 or Newmedica on 01274 940 519. If you are using private health insurance, your insurer may require a GP referral letter before authorising the cost, so check your policy first.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Private consultations are typically available within 1–2 weeks. Urgent cases can often be accommodated sooner — please mention urgency when you call.
Which private hospitals does Mr Mohyudin consult at?
Mr Mohyudin sees private patients at Spire Elland Hospital (Elland Lane, Elland, Halifax HX5 9EB) and at Newmedica Bradford & Huddersfield. He is also the substantive NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.
Which insurers does Mr Mohyudin accept?
Mr Mohyudin is recognised by all major UK private health insurers, including Bupa (fee-assured), AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality, WPA (Western Provident Association), and Cigna. Please obtain pre-authorisation from your insurer before your appointment.
How much does a private consultation cost?
A private consultation fee is confirmed at the time of booking through Spire Elland Hospital (01422 324000) or Newmedica (01274 940 519). Fees typically include the consultation and any routine examination. Additional diagnostic tests may be charged separately.
Can I self-refer for a second opinion?
Yes. You are entitled to seek a second opinion from any consultant ophthalmologist, privately, without needing your original surgeon's approval. Please bring any relevant letters, imaging, or reports to help Mr Mohyudin give you the most informed opinion.
Cataract Surgery
What is the difference between NHS and private cataract surgery?
NHS cataract surgery uses a standard monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) that typically corrects distance vision, meaning you will still need glasses for reading. Private surgery allows a wider choice of lens — including toric lenses and multifocal or EDOF lenses — potentially reducing dependence on glasses for all distances. Private patients also benefit from shorter waiting times (weeks rather than months), more detailed pre-operative biometry, and continuity of care with the same consultant throughout.
How long is the waiting list for NHS cataract surgery in Yorkshire?
NHS cataract surgery waiting times across England currently average 12–18 months from GP referral to operation, with West Yorkshire Trust waiting times broadly in line with this. Private cataract surgery with Mr Mohyudin at Spire Elland Hospital can typically be arranged within 4–8 weeks of your first consultation — with no GP referral required.
How long does cataract surgery take?
The operation itself takes approximately 15–20 minutes per eye. You will be at the hospital or clinic for 2–3 hours in total, including preparation, the procedure, and a short recovery period before going home.
Can I drive after cataract surgery?
Most patients can drive once their vision in the operated eye meets the DVLA standard (6/12 on the Snellen chart). This typically happens within a few days to a couple of weeks after surgery, though it varies by individual. You must not drive home on the day of surgery — you will need someone to collect you.
What is an EDOF lens and how does it differ from a multifocal?
An Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lens uses a single elongated focal point to provide a continuous range of vision from distance to intermediate, with less glare and halos than a traditional multifocal. Multifocal lenses split light to create two or three distinct focal points (distance, intermediate, near). EDOF lenses tend to suit patients who drive frequently or work at screens; multifocals suit those wanting good unaided reading vision. Mr Mohyudin discusses the pros and cons with each patient individually.
What is the success rate of cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and successful operations in medicine. National data shows a serious complication rate of approximately 1 in 1,000 procedures. The vast majority of patients achieve the vision they expect. Mr Mohyudin has performed over 5,000 cataract operations.
Can both eyes be done at the same time?
In the UK, both eyes are not routinely operated on the same day. Mr Mohyudin will typically operate on each eye separately, with the second eye scheduled 2–4 weeks after the first, allowing the first eye to recover and the power of the second lens to be fine-tuned if needed.
Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?
This depends on the lens implanted. A standard monofocal lens corrects distance vision, and most patients require reading glasses for near work. Multifocal or EDOF lenses aim to reduce dependence on glasses at all distances, though no lens guarantees complete spectacle independence.
What are the risks of cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the safest operations performed in the UK. The most common secondary issue is posterior capsule opacification (PCO) — cloudiness behind the new lens affecting around 20–30% of patients within 2–5 years — easily treated in 10 minutes with a YAG laser procedure. Serious risks (infection, retinal detachment) are rare, occurring in fewer than 1 in 1,000 cases.
Is cataract surgery available in Bradford, Halifax, and Huddersfield?
Yes. Mr Mohyudin performs private cataract surgery at Spire Elland Hospital (Elland, near Halifax) and sees patients at Newmedica in Bradford and Huddersfield. All three locations are in West Yorkshire, well within reach of patients from across the region.
Squint (Strabismus) Surgery
Is squint surgery available for adults, or is it only for children?
Squint surgery is performed in both adults and children. In adults, it is most commonly done to correct a long-standing cosmetic squint, to treat double vision (diplopia), or to address a squint that has developed following an injury or neurological event. Mr Mohyudin is one of the few consultants in Yorkshire with subspecialty fellowship training in adult and paediatric strabismus surgery.
Can squint surgery fix double vision?
Squint surgery can significantly improve or resolve double vision caused by misaligned eyes in many patients, but results depend on the underlying cause and the degree of misalignment. Mr Mohyudin will assess the cause of the diplopia at consultation and advise whether surgery, prisms in glasses, or another treatment is appropriate.
Is squint surgery available on the NHS?
Yes. Squint surgery for functional indications (double vision, amblyopia risk in children) is available on the NHS. Purely cosmetic squint correction in adults may not be NHS-funded. Mr Mohyudin operates on NHS squint patients at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and on private patients at Spire Elland Hospital.
What is the recovery time after squint surgery?
The eyes are typically red and gritty for 1–3 weeks after squint surgery. Most adults return to desk work within 1–2 weeks. The final eye position is assessed at 6–8 weeks. Occasionally a second procedure is needed to fine-tune the result — this is not unusual and does not indicate failure.
Is squint surgery done under general anaesthetic?
In children, squint surgery is always performed under general anaesthetic. In adults, it can be performed under local anaesthetic (you are awake but comfortable) or general anaesthetic depending on patient preference and clinical factors. Mr Mohyudin will discuss the options with you at your consultation.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty & Ptosis)
Can I get blepharoplasty on the NHS?
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is available on the NHS when excess skin significantly restricts the upper visual field, as confirmed by a formal visual field test. The criteria are strict. Aesthetic blepharoplasty and lower eyelid surgery are not NHS-funded.
How long is recovery after eyelid surgery?
Most patients have noticeable bruising and swelling for 10–14 days. Sutures are removed at 5–7 days. The majority of patients return to office work within 2 weeks. The full cosmetic result is visible at 3–6 months.
Will there be a visible scar?
The upper eyelid scar is placed within the natural lid crease and is typically imperceptible once healed. Lower eyelid external scars are placed just below the lash line and heal to a very fine line in the vast majority of patients.
What is ptosis and is it the same as blepharoplasty?
Ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelid caused by a weakness or disinsertion of the levator muscle. It is a different condition to dermatochalasis (excess eyelid skin), which is what blepharoplasty addresses. A patient can have both, and they can be addressed at the same time.
Paediatric Eye Care
At what age should my child have their eyes tested?
All children in the UK are offered a vision screening check before they start school (age 4–5). If there is any concern earlier — family history of squint, amblyopia, or high glasses prescription — have your child seen from age 3 or earlier.
My child has a squint. How urgent is it?
Any constant squint in a child should be assessed within 2–4 weeks. An intermittent squint warrants assessment within 4–8 weeks. A squint associated with reduced vision or a white reflex is urgent and should be seen as soon as possible.
Is private paediatric ophthalmology available in Yorkshire?
Yes. Mr Mohyudin offers private paediatric ophthalmology consultations at Spire Elland Hospital (Halifax) and through Newmedica (Bradford and Huddersfield). Private appointments are typically available within 1–2 weeks.
